Os filmes mais nomeados deste ano são  Birdman e The Grand Budapest Hotel, com 9 nomeações cada um. 

Como principais surpresas, este ano apenas há 8 filmes nomeados na categoria de Melhor Filme, o número mais baixo desde que foi instituído nesta categoria o limite máximo de 10 filmes nomeados, em 2009. David Fincher, Amy Adams (vencedora do Globo de Ouro), Ralph Fiennes, David Oyelowo, Jake Gyllenhaal e Jennifer Aniston foram deixados para trás. Laura Dern, Marion Cotillard e Bradley Cooper foram nomeados inesperadamente, uma vez que nem tinham sido nomeados nos Globos de Ouro. Gone Girl recebeu apenas uma nomeação. The Lego Movie, a principal competição de How to Train your Dragon 2, também não foi nomeado, contrariamente ao esperado. 

Por sua vez, Meryl Streep continua a bater os seus próprios recordes e foi nomeada, sem surpresa, pela 19ª vez. Robert Duvall, de 84 anos, foi nomeado pela 7ª vez depois de mais de 10 anos da sua última nomeação, tornando-se o actor mais velho a ser nomeado, de sempre.
